Stardate 47310.2 When the USS Fleming, a medical transport, disappears in an area which poses a hazard to warp-driven vessels, the Enterprise arrives on the scene to investigate. After confronting a Ferengi ship that was spotted in the area, the crew traces the Fleming to a debris field where they encounter a small object that emits a verteron pulse which disables their sub-space systems. Moments later, two aliens board the Enterprise and reveal that they have been disabling ships in the area in an effort to get Starfleet to investigate. According to their research, the use of warp drives in the area is decimating their planet and may be destroying the very fabric of space. |

Stardate 47410.2 The Enterprise travels to Atrea to assist two scientists who are trying to avert an impending natural disaster. One of the scientists, Juliana Tainer (Fionnula Flanagan) reveals that she was once married to Data's (Brent Spiner) creator, Dr. Soong, and is, in effect, his mother. Unfortunately, Data has no memory of her and is confused as to shy his own mother would never attempt to contact him. When confronted, Juliana admits that she and Soon left him on Omicron Theta not because they had to, but because she feared that if he were reactivated, he would become evil, like his brother Lore. Eventually, Data senses something strange about his mother and begins to investigate her true origins. |
