Tuvok (Tim Russ) has a dark secret in his past - one that might destroy his future. When Tuvok experiences mental pain and dizziness, the doctor (Robert Picardo) believes the cause may be a repressed traumatic memory. With his neural system starting to degrade, Tuvok asks Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) to mind-meld with him, hoping that together they can bring the memory into consciousness. The mind-meld takes Tuvok and Janeway to the site of Tuvok's first Starfleet assignment - the Starship Excelsior, commanded by Captain Hikaru Sulu (George Takei). Tuvok clashes with Sulu, objecting to their mission: an attempt to rescue Captain Kirk and Doctor McCoy from the Klingon homeworld. As the Excelsior heads into battle, the mind-meld goes amiss. Suddenly, Tuvok is in grave danger...and Janeway is visible to the Excelsior crew.

Outwitted by Kazon raiders who seized their ship, Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and the Voyager crew have been abandoned on the planet Hanon IV. While the captain and her crew fight to survive the planet's harsh conditions, two Starfleet members struggle to stay alive aboard Voyager. Unbeknownst to the Kazon, the doctor (Robert Picardo) and Ensign Lon Suder are still on the ship. The doctor knows they must devise a plan to wrest control of Voyager from the Kazon. But Suder, who has been undergoing rehabilitation for his violent tendencies, is plagued by self-doubts. Can Suder face his inner demons and battle the Kazon...or are Janeway and her crew doomed to die on Hanon IV?
