While exploring an uncharted asteroid, Chakotay (Robert Beltran), Kim (Garrett Wang) and B'Elanna (Roxann Biggs-Dawson) stumble upon the burial ground of the alien race Vhnori. During the investigation Kim is caught up in a vacuole and deposited on the Vhnori's homeworld. Meanwhile, an alien woman, Ptera, who was to be transported to the asteroid, is beamed aboard Voyager with Chakotay and B'Elanna. Kim soon realizes that the only way he can return home is the same way he came: through the Vhnori's death stations. Voyager moves in closer to the planet to search for Kim, but they can find no trace of him. Before they must abandon their search they discover a vacuole has deposited a human on the asteroid. As they beam this person aboard, their only hope is that it is Kim.

The Voyager's people are overjoyed on the planet, but they soon find out that the Sikarians have their own prime directive which prevents them from sharing their technology with less advanced races.
