Murder...or mercy? When Dr. Bashir (Alexander Siddig) and Lt. Commander Dax (Terry Farrell) arrive on a planet in the Gamma Quadrant, they find that all the inhabitants are afflicted with a painful, fatal hereditary illness - and that a local doctor (Michael Sarrazin) eases the victims' anguish through mercy killings. But Bashir believes a more merciful solution exists. He has the unflinching determination and the scientific know-how necessary to search for a cure. Returning from a mission aboard the Defiant, Commander Sisko (Avery Brooks) discovers that the station has undergone an assault from the Jem' Hadar. Giving chase, Sisko locates a damaged Jem' Hadar warship and beams aboard the ship's only survivors: six Jem' Hadar soldiers and their Vorta field supervisor, Weyoun (Jeffrey Combs).

Weyoun tells Sisko that the Dominion has located an Iconian Gateway that would allow travel to other planets without the use of starships. But the Gateway has been seized by Jem' Hadar renegades. Weyoun entreats Sisko to help the Jem' Hadar attack the renegades...but is Sisko willing to entrust the safety of his crew to an enemy that has pledged to destroy the Federation?
