Stardate 42437.5 The Enterprise receives a distress call from Kareen Brianon (Barbara Alyn Woods), assistant to Ira Graves (W. Morgan Sheppard), one of the greatest minds in the universe and teacher of Noonian Soong. Data (Brent Spiner) develops an instant rapport with Graves, who is fatally ill. Graves tells Data he has discovered a means to transfer his life's knowledge into a computer, and then dies. Aboard the Enterprise, Data displays uncharacteristic human behavior, and accuses Picard (Patrick Stewart) of lustful intents toward the beautiful Kareen. A psychological examination reveals Data now consists of two conflicting personalities - his own rational side, and the fiery human mind of Graves which is slowly consuming the android. As Graves schemes to create an android body for his love Kareen, Picard fights to set Data free. |

Stardate 42477.2 The Enterprise is diverted to the Ramatis star system when Picard (Patrick Stewart) receives orders to transport a famous mediator, Riva (Howie Seago), to the site of a planetary conflict on Solais Five. The Crew is surprised to discover that Riva is a deaf mute and communicates through a chorus of three people who translate his thoughts into words. Riva is immediately drawn to the empathic Troi (Marina Sirtis), and they develop a deep mutual affection. When Riva meets the leaders of the warring parties, a rebellious soldier opens fire, killing the chorus and forcing Riva and the away team to escape. Now, unless Picard and his crew can persuade Riva to resume mediations, Solais Five will be plunged into war. |
