Stardate 42073.1 While preparing to transport samples of a lethal plasma plague, the crew receives some startling news: Counselor Troi (Marina Sirtis) is pregnant. According to Troi, she was impregnated by a glowing white light. The ship's new Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Kate Pulaski (Diana Muldaur), watches in amazement as Troi gives birth to Ian, a half-human, half-Betazoid boy who ages eight years in one day. Meanwhile, another child of the Enterprise, Wesley (Wil Wheaton) wrestles with his prospects. He must choose between joining his mother at Starfleet medical or staying onboard the ship. With some advice from Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg), the bartender in the Ten Forward lounge, Wesley decides to remain on the ship. But everyone's future is threatened when the force-field surrounding the plague specimens is compromised by an unexpected source: Ian. |

Stardate 42193.6 Traveling to the Morgana Quadrant, the Enterprise is trapped in a dimensionless void. Giant human eyes soon appear on the main view screen, and the being identifies itself as Nagilum (Earl Boen). Nagilum tells Picard (Patrick Stewart) that he has decided to use the ship's crew to study the ways in which humans meet death. After killing one crew member, Nagilum tells the captain that his "experiment" will result in the extinction of at least one-third of the Enterprise's population. Unwilling to stand by and watch a systematic slaughter, Picard makes one of the most difficult decisions of his career. With Riker's support, Picard programs the auto-destruct system of the ship. Unless Nagilum can be stopped within twenty minutes, the Enterprise and its crew will be destroyed. |
